The Family on Easter Sunday, 1961

Suddenly the sixties is a very chic era, though that decade seems a long way off: when this picture was taken in 1961, the computer power needed to allow you to view it on a screen would have filled the room and needed another room for the refrigeration unit to keep it cool. A megabyte was a big burger and windows were things you looked out of.

No PCs… no Internet…no Second Life. No NewsFeed. No wonder they look so uncomfortable.

So in this last edition before the easter break, we bring you a rich cornucopia of delights from across the digital universe. Here you’ll find news of the latest JISC funding opportunities, of mobile training for hairdressers, of online earthquakes and online telescopes. We have more image resources to add to the growing collection, the Internet and podcasting for beginners and a challenging piece on whether our traditional vocabulary of ‘courses’ and ‘units’ can withstand the pressures of the digital age. Where are we going and where have we been?

As usual, if we’re missing any major areas that you think need a mention or if your institution is using technology in a way that the rest of the community really should be told about, then please let us know and we’ll do the rest. If you have any comments on any aspect of this issue then here at the two Scottish RSCs we’ll be delighted to hear from you.

(The next edition of NewsFeed is scheduled for Tuesday, April 8th.)
