The John Johnson Collection, one of the largest archives of printed ephemera in the world, has recently been digitised as a result of a partnership between JISC’s Digitisation Programme, the Bodleian Library, the University of Oxford and Proquest.

The collection of more than 65,000 items provides a unique insight into life in Britain in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries. Materials include posters, playbills for theatrical entertainments, broadsides relating to murders and executions, popular prints and a wide range of printed advertising material.
The collection is available free of charge to UK FE and HE institutions, schools and public libraries. View further information.

I see the John Johnson Collection is free to HE institutions. Will it be permanently free, or is it a free trial? I tried to log in via the RSAMD Shibboleth (I am Music and Academic Services Librarian at RSAMD) but the system said we weren’t signed up to the Collection, so presumably we have to register as an institution first?
Hi Karen, It is always hard to definitely say that something will be free forever, but I think it’s safe to say that this collection should remain free for UK institutions (most of the cost has already been spent in digitising and indexing the collection). Re login I just tried to log in in and the site appeared automatically authenticate me (I guess by IP address) I did notice there was an option for Remote users to login via your home organisation which eventually would allow you to login via RSAMD Shibboleth. If you still have problems you can contact the John Johnson Collection here http://johnjohnson.chadwyck.co.uk/info/contactus.do
